Research Grants

Twice a year, the ITI Foundation for the Promotion of Implantology supports clinical and laboratory research in implant dentistry and related fields through its Research Committee. Two grant types are available, as described under Research Grants.

There are two deadlines for grant applications each year: February 27 and August 31. Late applications will not be accepted.

Description of ITI Research Grants.

The ITI Foundation offers the following two types of grant:

1. Small Grant (SG)
This grant is primarily intended for research proposals submitted by young clinicians who have been working within established groups and wish to expand their scope and level of responsibility. It is also intended for newer investigators who want to establish a track record in implant dentistry. This may be by pursuing their own research interests or by building up their own research group.
The grant application should not exceed CHF 50,000 (CHF = Swiss Francs).

Applications must be submitted using the ITI Research Grant Application Form provided on this website. The form must be filled in accordance with the ITI Research Grant Application Guidelines (PDF). Only those forms that comply with these Guidelines will be evaluated by the ITI Research Committee.

The goal of the project is directed towards publication in an international peer-reviewed journal. Clear hypothesis testing is a prerequisite. Intermediate and/or final reports must be provided to the ITI Center as requested.

2. Clinical or Laboratory Research Grant (CLRG):
This grant type will be awarded only to researchers or research groups who have established a reputation for credibility and thoroughness in the field as demonstrated by a continuous publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
The grant amount may exceed CHF 100,000, but should not be higher than CHF 200,000.

Applications must be submitted using the ITI Research Grant Application Form provided on this website. The form must be filled in accordance with the ITI Research Grant Application Guidelines (PDF). A detailed description of the research plan and the various methods to be used must be provided. Funding from other sources (universities, foundations or third parties) must be disclosed. Intermediate and final reports must be provided to the ITI Center as requested.

The results of ITI-supported research are to be published in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals. Should the final report itself not be in the form of a manuscript for publication, a short report on where and how the report is to be submitted / published must be included.

RCL grants are awarded exclusively to experienced researchers with a proven track record, i.e. a publication record in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals.

Review Process.

The ITI Research Committee is composed of ten members from various countries and disciplines. The ITI Research Committee meets twice a year, in March/April and in October/November. At these meetings, the Committee members review the applications received by the most recent deadline.

The following criteria are applied when reviewing applications:

1. Relevance to current clinical issues in implant dentistry
2. Hypothesis/Methods
3. Experience of the applying researchers/academic affiliation and research conditions/environment
4. Transparent and realistically formulated budget

The decision taken by the ITI Research Committee will be communicated to the applicants within two to three weeks of the Committee meeting (in May or December) by the ITI Center.

One of four alternatives is possible:

    • acceptance of the project as submitted
    • acceptance of the project with a budget revision
    • request for revision according to given criteria
    • rejection of the project

As a matter of policy, the Research Committee does not provide any reasons for not awarding a grant to any particular project.

The ITI Research Grant Application Form is to be downloaded from this website, to be filled out in accordance with the ITI Research Grant Application Guidelines (PDF) and to be emailed to the ITI Center (research@iticenter.ch) by the deadline.
